Tricks for faster mental multiplication

  • Split and add: 47 × 6 = 40 × 6 + 7 × 6 = 240 + 42 = 282.
  • Times 11: add the digits and put the total in the middle. 47 × 11 → 4, (4+7=11), 7 → carry the 1 → 517.
  • Times 5: halve the number and multiply by 10. 48 × 5 = 24 × 10 = 240.
  • Times 9 or 99: use 10 (or 100) times the number, minus the number. 36 × 9 = 360 − 36 = 324, and 99 × 7 = 700 − 7 = 693.
  • Times 25: divide by 4, then multiply by 100. 36 × 25 = 9 × 100 = 900.
  • Double and halve: 35 × 16 = 70 × 8 = 140 × 4 = 280 × 2 = 560.

Frequently asked questions

What is 36 × 25?

36 × 25 = 900. Times 25: divide by 4, then multiply by 100. 36 × 25 = 9 × 100 = 900.

What is 47 × 11?

47 × 11 = 517. Times 11: add the digits and put the total in the middle. 47 × 11 → 4, (4+7=11), 7 → carry the 1 → 517.

What is 99 × 7?
