Mental Division Test
mediumDivision gets easy once you know your times tables. This test asks ten exact divisions per round: Easy divides a 2-digit number by a single digit, Medium divides a 3-digit number by a single digit, and Hard divides by a number from 11 to 25.
3-digit ÷ 1-digit.
Every question divides exactly, so there are no remainders or decimals. The chart lists the divisibility rules for 2 to 11, and the tricks below cover halving and dividing by 5.
Divisibility rules
| Divisible by | Rule | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | The last digit is even | 748 ends in 8 |
| 3 | The digits add up to a multiple of 3 | 462: 4 + 6 + 2 = 12 |
| 4 | The last two digits make a multiple of 4 | 316: 16 is a multiple of 4 |
| 5 | The last digit is 0 or 5 | 1,235 ends in 5 |
| 6 | Even and divisible by 3 | 138: even, and 1 + 3 + 8 = 12 |
| 8 | The last three digits make a multiple of 8 | 1,248: 248 = 8 × 31 |
| 9 | The digits add up to a multiple of 9 | 729: 7 + 2 + 9 = 18 |
| 10 | The last digit is 0 | 5,430 ends in 0 |
| 11 | Alternating digit sum is 0 or a multiple of 11 | 2,728: 2 − 7 + 2 − 8 = −11 |
Tricks for faster mental division
- Division is multiplication backwards. If you know 13 × 7 = 91, you know 91 ÷ 13 = 7 and 91 ÷ 7 = 13.
- Halve repeatedly to divide by 2, 4 or 8: 432 ÷ 8 → 216 → 108 → 54.
- To divide by 5, double the number and divide by 10: 135 ÷ 5 = 270 ÷ 10 = 27.
- Use the divisibility rules in the chart to check whether a division will come out exactly before you start.
Frequently asked questions
Is 462 divisible by 3?
Yes. The digits add up to 4 + 6 + 2 = 12, which is a multiple of 3, so 462 is divisible by 3 (462 ÷ 3 = 154).
What is 432 ÷ 8?
432 ÷ 8 = 54. Halve repeatedly to divide by 2, 4 or 8: 432 ÷ 8 → 216 → 108 → 54.
How do you divide by 5 quickly?
To divide by 5, double the number and divide by 10: 135 ÷ 5 = 270 ÷ 10 = 27.
How do you know if a number is divisible by 11?
Add and subtract its digits alternately. If the result is 0 or a multiple of 11, the number is divisible by 11. For 2,728: 2 − 7 + 2 − 8 = −11, so it is (2,728 ÷ 11 = 248).
How is the speed maths test scored?
Each test has 10 questions. Answer 8 or more correctly to pass. Your time is recorded for the whole test, and your best time for each test and level is saved on your own device, so you can try to beat it.
